Speak | Ballad of Pop, Lock & Drop (mp3)
May 7th, 2009

Our resident “quick-wit, dilitaunt, suave debonair,” Speak, drops a stray shot dubbed the “Ballad of Pop, Lock & Drop.” It’s quickly made its rounds on the twitterscape, 2500+ downloads in 24 hours and counting (check for yourself.) Lacing Lil’ Kim’s “Crush on You” with some new verbs, Speak is your remedy if you’ve been jonsing for a refreshing curve-ball in your iTunes Hip Hop playlist.
Speak certainly isn’t an artist to be slept on, his music is uniquely versatile due to his antiquarian like obsessions with pop-culture & indie-rock; all built on the fine-tuning and foundation of years on the Inland Empire & Southern Cali Hip Hop circuit. Personally I can remember Speak running circles around the local I.E. hip hop scene ever since I got involved 5-6 years ago, battling cats & rocking shows as one-third of the Moreno Valley hip hop group, Soul Rock Affiliates. Soul Rock was well ahead of its time & also spawned both Afta-1 and DJ Nevi Nev, all of which are continuing to make a voracious mark on the So. Cal. music scene.
Speak’s music can be off-the-wall eccentric, carry emotional depth, tell a romantic story, or be a circus-like party. It’ll have the backpackers digging the depths of their Jansport and hipsters attempting to find a rhythm to shuffle to. With self-professed idol’s like Iggy Pop, Freddie Mercury, Talking Heads, The Germs, & Anton Newcombe, chaos & unpredictability are eminent, but great music is a requisite. The references in “Ballad of Pop, Lock & Drop” alone will have you challenging your pop-culture I.Q and running to Wikipedia for confirmation. For example, in this track check the subtle, but nuianced homage to The Jetson’s with a reference to Mr. Spacely & ‘Spacely Space Sprockets;’ That’s one of dozens of gems found throughout Speak’s verses.
Applebird Records & East of L.A. got a few exciting projects coming your way, we’re currently wrapping up the details on two new projects by Speak, stay tuned for both Gnarly Davidson & The Marlboro Men & The Kite Flyer E.P. (Reissue). Both of which are soon bound to stir up your walkmen. Till then I’m digging in my hard drive and leaking the original rough cut to “Darby Crash” a track you’ll be hearing on The Kite Flyer E.P. (Reissue) be sure to hit us with your feedback!

I dont know what that sarcastic rant is about wolf pussy… Im talking about people making songs about rock legends who have no business doing it.

I didn’t know you had to pull a permit from the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in order make a song about a Rock Legend. Deal with it, cause that certainly aint punk!

Im not saying he shouldnt be allowed to. Im saying hes an ass for believing those people have anything to do with what he thinks is music.

Thanks for the laugh mentioning these places like the Hall of Fame and Hot Topic which have no musical relevance.

Sorry roc i didnt mean to hurt your e-feelingzzz. But the truth of the matter is this. The fact you know nothing about this kid, his influences or the type of live show he puts on, yet have no problem calling him a “pretentious douche” shows you are a music elitist/ e thug who only validates himself by casting judgment on people.
here are a few fun facts for you Rocco
1-There is a video circulating of speak having a long sit down discussion with Ian Mackaye on the history of punk and the eastcoast scene in particular. Last time i checked Ian was in two of the most influential bands in the history of American hardcore music. I guess speak is a poser for having an intellectual conversation with someone who is a living god.
2-New flash you “pretentious douche” the germs were the shittiest of the l.a punk bands. I know speak would disagree..but they couldn’t play their instruments, couldnt write good tunes and got blown out of the water every time they played with the true west coast kings The Circle jerks. Darby lived and died a sad, pathetic, drug induced life and could never EVER be as talented as a group like the Bad Brains or Black Flag (pre rollins years)
3- The song isnt even about darby crash. He is a name drop at best and a title. Pull the stick from your ass and tampons from your ears and open your damn eyes.
4- Fuck outta here with your expert opinion on who is qualified to make a reference to one of their influences. Last time i checked people who has aquabats “pool party” on their last fm play list dont have the right to start calling people out.
Now slag off and god save the quee

1) Ian Mackaye. Wow. Great name drop. How many pretentious indie rockers would love o suck his cock.
2) Talent has nothing to do with “punk rock.” You seem to know a lot for someone who was never a “punk”. I mean none of those type of people could possibly be wasting their life now on the internet arguing with people and looking through those peoples online profiles? Youre either an old loser who wished he could be one of those type of people back in your day or a kid who read about them in a book.
3) Exactly its a name-drop. This is a name-dropping pretentious hipster douche. That was my point.
4) What I cant listen to my recommendations radio? Im 18 years old you can see from my profile. Its not like I heard that song in the 1990s and became a fan of them. Its not like I had time to listen to a lot of indie rock music when I was learning to spell. You probably just have bad memories of people having fun listening to it at parties you werent invited to. Its not the songs fault you were a dork. Get over it.
