These two, Mick Boogie & Terry Urban, have really made 2008 a brighter time to reminisce about. They’ve had an incredible year, and have hit home run’s with several of their mixtapes, most notably the Viva La Hova mix we covered in late October. They’ve practically changed how mixtapes are distributed & organized, I’m not going to say these two fella’s invented the internet mixtape,  but they’ve definantly perfected it… I’m going to call it “Mick Boogie x Terry Urban = Mixtape 2.0.”

And like the Shangai industrial district, they just keep cranking out the product… They’ve put together a nice reminder compilation of hip hop in 2008, plus they’ve added a bit of a twist to the new classics. Some of my favorite tracks are streaming below, download the mixtape, & check the full track listing after the jump.

  1. How did they “changed how mixtapes are distributed & organized”? I don’t see how did anything different thananyone else.

I can’t believe they have “amillie” as the BEST of 2008. WTF? Where’s DJ Revolution’s “The DJ” or Brother Ali’s “Mr. President You’re The Man”? Or any tracks from El Da Sensei or Ill Bill. Or even the best song of 2008 Royce Da 5′ 9” “Gunz Up The Guns”. Most of tracks are god awful. I definitely wouldn’t consider them the “best”. They’re only best in the category of the best songs the industry marketed and made money off of.

Good music released in 2008 was pretty slim. There were alot disappointments..Murs…DJ Babu..Everlast.There were some good ones though like El DA Sensei, Ill Bill, Q Tip & Royce DA 5′ 9”.

“The music they no longer fans of it, they wanna use it
So they can get a grand and sh*t.”

  2. Beyond Drama, find any mixtape DJ in the last 8 years that have gotten the media attention that these two have, nope no one. Their reach in terms of digital downloads goes far beyond what anyone has done these past couple years. Give credit where credit is due man, if they were simply doing what everyone else was doing what do you attribute to their success? A global conspiracy by Def Jam? These guys bridged the gap between mainstream rappers and “hipster rappers”, between mixtape DJs & mashup DJs, hip hop & electro, not only promoting themselves but exposing a new audience to a dozen new talented rappers & DJs in the meantime. They utilized all the social media marketing they could could get their hands on, and did it well, find anyone more blogged about.

Yes Millie is in the Best of ‘08, cause its a hard ass track, no all those other tracks you mentioned don’t belong in the list, cause beyond a handful of backpackers and hardcore music fans, no one even knows those tracks existed in 2008. QTip is featured on the mixtape and so are Jay Z, Estelle, NERD, Common, The Roots, Mos Def, Terminology, Bun B, & MIA all of whom had a steller year & produced GREAT music.

And yes music is an industry, not a non-profit service to humanity, ask KRS ONE he charges $5k for a lecture and $15k for a set, then he gets driven to his big ass home in Calabasas, CA in a candy coated Cadillac Escalade. Or maybe demanding that international promoters buy-out first class for himself is a reasonable demand?

    I’m not hatin, I’m just sayin…
