Evidence | The Layover | Album Review
November 23rd, 2008
Here’s what the peeps have been waiting for Evidence’s new album The Layover (in stores November 25th). As we speak “Mr. Slow Flow” is on tour in Europe with the rest of Dilated Peoples but I’m sure he ‘ll be back in town for some concerts soon enough. I’m sure many, like myself, can’t wait to hear the new songs performed live.
Well to be honest I was feelin “The Weatherman” album more than this EP but it’s EV so you can’t really hate on it. I can’t really speak ill of a member of Dilated Peoples. Dilated is like family to us Hip Hoppas in Southern California. I remember back in the day before Babu joined Dilated and when Rakaa use to work at HEX’s Hip Hop Shop out in LA. It’s still kinda surprising to see peeps you used see around the way attain success in the music biz. Anyways back to the album.
The album sounds exactly like you would expect from Evidence, slow melodic head nodding beats. One thing to remember this an EP not a full album. It only contains 10 songs.
The overall sound of Ev’s new album is a more laidback vibe than high energy underground sound you usually get from Dilated Peoples. There’s no fast paced “Claiming Respect” type joints on this EP. Although I enjoy Ev’s rhymes and voice at times he does, to me at least, sound like he struggling to rhyme to beat. He sounds like he should be rhyming to faster beats. His flow is kinda off. I wish he would rhyme to faster type joints but that’s his style. He is Mr. Slow Flow after all.
Here are the joints that stand above the rest on this release:
“So Fresh”, the first song from of the new group The Step Brothers (Evidence & Alchemist), and “The Far Left” featuring Alchemist & Fashawn were two songs that had my head nodding.
“Rain Or Shine” is the best song on this short release. I love how EV used the CL Smooth/Pete Rock sample from “They Reminiscence Over You”.
The second best song is “To Be Determined” featuring Elzhi & Aloe Blacc. Why Elzhi isn’t more well known is a mystery to me. He kills it on every track I heard him on. Hopefully Chang Weisberg & Murs will add him to next year’s Paid Dues festival. Last year’s Paid Dues was mad ill it’s too bad I missed it.
The last track “The Cold Weather” is another song worthy of mentioning.
Well there you have it The Layover by Evidence in stores November 25th. It’s little something to slake your thirst before EV & Alchemist’s The Step Brothers project and that new Dilated Peoples album comes through sometime next year. CA Dilated fans you what to do…BUY THE ALBUM…support the home team.

That’s good to know. Maybe That’s why it sounds a little different than the rest of the EP. Despite may joints on Duck Season 3 Babu does make decent beats.
