The new album from Royce DA 5′ 9″ simply entitled The Album comes out, like Q Tip’s album Renaissance , today… November 4th .

If you heard his mixtape released back in September called Bar Exam 2 then you know what to expect from Royce. Hardcore Hip Hop from a great MC.

Despite what it says on the album cover that “mixed by Green Lantern“  is a total fabrication. There is no mixing on this album. Unless it refers to Green Lantern having a hand in determining the order of the songs on this release. I can’t say.

Most of the tunes on this album are straight hardcore Hip Hop. No commercial southern style beats (except “We Everywhere“) or underground Hip Hop sounds on “The Album” just straight forward hardcore Hip Hop.

One thing on this album that is weird, besides the Green Lantern thing, is it contains Black Milk’s “Losing Out” (the song off Black Milk’s Tronic featuring Royce) and is called by a different name…”Let’s Talk“. Why they changed the name of the song for Royce’s album when it’s no different than Black Milk’s version is a mystery to me.

Anyway the standouts on this release are…

“Promise Land” is the first song on the album is a good solid tune. Produced by Nottz, the new up and coming producer, it sets the album off in the right direction.

“Give Up Your Gunz” featuring Talib Kweli and produced by an unknown new producer DJ Which is a high energy banger. One of the best Hip Hop joints this year.

“On The Low” the track produced by 9th Wonder is, as you would expect from 9th Wonder, a great head nodding rolling beat. 9th Wonder should have used this type of beats for Murs and then maybe Murs For President would have been a better album but I digress.

“Angel” is a good soul-type tune. Produced by another unknown producer Carlos Broady the song uses a nice 60’s soul sample.

All in all 13 joints of pure great Hip Hop with only one not so good song (We Everywhere). Quite a good release if you ask me. Definitely worth the 14 bones. Royce Da 5′ 9″ The Album out on November 4th…Support Real Hip Hop.

  1. Um, carlos Broady is far from unknown! He was one of the origional Bad Boy hitmen, and he’s produced countless classics. He produced Whats beef for Biggie. Or as you may call him, a little known rapper from brooklyn.
