Dred Scott
Breakin Combs (1994) |53 MB|

The album from the man you probably never heard of before. It’s shame though like many MC’s from the 90’s most notably Chino XL & Ras Kass, Dred never received mainstream stardom. With his many connects in the industry on both coasts Dred Scott still was lost in shuffle of what was early 90’s Rap music industry.

Besides this album Jonathan “Dred” Scott went on to produce one of my favorite albums of all time a 1997 self titled album from Adrian Evans. By listening to both those releases one can’t help but to get a little sadden by what should have been.

Just recently John Brown for VH1’s “The White Rapper Show” has song out with a Dred Scott called Pimp Mode. I’m not exactly sure if he’s the same as this Dred Scott. They look and sound different but it has been over 10 years. People aged and look differently. Now for the album.

One thing you’ll notice by listening to this release is Dred Scott rhyming changes throughout the album from frantic DAS EFX style rhyming to laidback Q Tip style raps. He changes his the sound of his voice as well. Sometimes he sounds just like Grand Puba and sometimes like Black Thought from The Roots.

“Back in the Day” and “Can’t Hold It Back” are fast paced beats. The latter is one of the best joints on this album. It features Tragedy (Khadafi), the former Intelligent Hoodlum.

“Duck Ya Head” I really feelin. It sounds like a DAS EFX joint.

“Check the Vibe” is nice cool joint with Adriana Evans singing on the chorus. This is definitely one of the best joints to released in 1994. Back in the day this was (and still is) one of my secret joints I would throw on to rock a party. Dee Jays add this joint to your crates. “My Mind Is Driftin” is sounds just like “Check the Vibe”. The very same drums with a intersperse organ sample throughout the song.

Two oddities on this release are “Dirty Old Man Skit” and “Intro” . The fomer which is not really a skit but a freestyle over the “Check The Vibe” beat and the latter is the 10th song on the album but it’s called “intro”. Kind of weird huh? “To Da Old School” is an short beatbox joint featuring Tradegy (Khadafi) is kind of unusual as well.

Both “Story” and “Nutin’ Ta Lose” are funky joints that can still rock a party today.

The worst song has to be “They Don’t Know”. Its just horrid. It sounds like Dred was trying to create a funkadelic type beat but it just doesn’t work for me. “Funky Rhythms” to a lesser extant is bad too . I feel it’s a filler joint but some may like it.

“Swingin’ from the Tree” Dred Scott rhyming of this song sounds just like Grand Puba. In fact the song can easily be mistaken for an early Brand Nubian joint.

“Liar” has a touch of a reggae feel. A kind of joint a Dee Jay would throw on to start his set. Not too fast but not slow either.

“Rough E Nuff” sounds like a D.I.T.C. type beat. Dred was indeed influenced by Diamond D when he made this joint. DAS EFX meets Diamond D best describes this song.

“Frankie’s Groove” is Dred Scott’s attempt at straight up Jazz with a Hip Hop feel. I can’t say it’s wack. In fact its’ pretty solid but it’s kind of out of place. It doesn’t fit the overall sound of the album.

There you have it Dred Scott’s 1994 album “Breakin Combs” is for the most part a solid production. Alot of good strong joints to add to an 90’s Hip Hop mix. Check it for yourself I’m sure you’ll be surprised you never heard of Dred Scott back in the day.
