The Beatnuts
The Spot (1998) |35 MB|
The mc/producing duo of The Beatnuts (Big Les & Ju Ju) has made a name for themselves in 90’s Hip Hop world. From classic club bangers like “Off The Books” & “Watch Out Now” to hardcore joints like “Props Over Here” and “Reign Of The Tec” The Beatnuts are well respected (but underrated and underappreciated) beatmakers. They skills as MCs can’t be called great but they can still spit with the best of them. The Spot
Now in my opinion this isn’t their best work but many can still appreciate it’s subtle and subdued sound in this short remix album, an EP.
“R U Ready II” is funky jazzy with a nice repeating tambourine rattle. Grand Puba from Brand Nubian makes guest appearance on the track.
“Get Funky Remix” isn’t as funky as the title suggests but it still bangs. It’s has a nice rolling beat. It’s very reminiscent of TLC’s “Creep”.
“No Equal Remix” like “Get Funky” is a rolling beat but a little more funkier.
“Psycho Dwarf II” is one of the four new tracks on this remix EP. The Beatnuts rock over a D.IT.C. type beat. It reminds me of the drum beat Diamond D produced for Brand Nubian’s remix to “Punks Jump To Get Beatdown”.
“Off The Books Remix” sounds like the beat from Slick Rick’s “Mona Lisa”. This remix doesn’t compare to the original beat but it still has a nice classic feel to it. Off the Books for those not in the know was Big Pun’s (RIP) first appearance on a track.
“Let Off A Couple II” sounds like a beat Common would feel at home with. Laidback coolness with a touch of piano in it.
“Props Over Here Remix“ is the remix to The Beatnuts very first song released in 1994. Back than the now duo were a trio. Kool Fashion now known as Al Tariq left the group sometime later after converting to Islam. He later collaborated with The Beatnuts with DJ Honda on DJ Honda’s 1998 song “On The Mic”.
“Treat$” is an introspective beat that creeps up on you. People will think of Wu Tang when they hear the beat. This is the best joint off the EP.
Some may even think they hear Wu Tang members on the track but it isn’t. It’s NOGOODUS, AL & Rawcotiks. NOGOODUS is featured on “Psycho Dwarf II” and AL & Rawcotiks are featured on “Let Off A Couple II”.
Treat$ is one those underground seldom heard classics that DJ’s will drop in on a mix and surprise the f*ck outta peeps. Take note DJ’s add this song to your crates.
Now this may not be a ‘bangin’ EP it’s more subdued kinda like J Dilla tracks but still it has a funkiness to it. Compared to the hipster Rap out there today it’s definitely way more creative and listenable. For those who like their beats subdued with a little funkiness this is one EP to add to your collection.

[…] The overall sound of this release is a mixture of early 90’s Hip Hop and what can now can be known as the west coast underground Hip Hop sound. Some of songs will remind you of the subdued sounds of The Beatnuts (especially of the remixes on “The Spot“) […]
