The multi-talented graphic artist and producer, Dan Nguyen (aka Demon Slayer) has been steady on his grind, performing live sets regularly as well as being commissioned for various mural projects. Luckily for those of us unfortunate enough to not have experienced a Demon Slayer performance as of yet, filmmaker Eye Tape has shot and edited an amazing video to accompany one of the artist’s cosmic tracks. The music video features snippets from one of Nguyen’s performances at the “Fly Ball” event at the Grand Star Jazz Club in Los Angeles.
Two more solo joints from one-half of the Chicago-based hip-hop duo The Cool Kids, Mikey Rocks for your listening pleasure. Though I can’t say I enjoyed the Gone Fishing mixtape, Tacklebox was a decent offering that redeemed the previous work’s mediocrity. What I will admit is that I dig these new solo joints a lot more than his work in The Cool Kids as of recent.
Admittedly, this video isn’t necessarily new (at least in light of the speed of information exchange in today’s day and age), the video for the second single off of the debut album O.M.G.! of British dubstep producer and DJ, Rusko is a dope one that we overlooked here. “Hold On” is a decent offering from Rusko, a joint that well represents the type of dubstep he produces; fun, poppy and less ominous than his peers. Indicative of this is the variety of artists he collaborated with on the record, which includes: Italian electro duo Crookers, rapper Gucci Mane, and Amber Coffman of the Dirty Projectors on the focused song.

The music video for the second single off of Body Talk, Pt. 1 by Swedish dance-pop artist, Robyn, takes a different approach from her others. Complimenting the song’s more down-played electronic pop, the video offers a glimpse into the life of a touring musician.
Another taste of Bun B’s newest upcoming record, Trill O.G., has been released. Produced by Boi-1da with the Degrassi rapper, Drake on the hook. A decent offering, though this collaboration was definitely my least anticipated.

If you weren’t lucky enough to catch the Gorillaz at the Coachella Festival this year, things are looking up for you, friend. In support of the band’s fantastic latest record, Plastic Beach, the Gorillaz have announced that they will embark on a world-wide tour spanning North America in October, Europe in November, Australia and New Zealand in December, and Hong Kong in yet to be determined dates. The latest drop from ‘No Snitchin’ Killa Cam and fellow Dipset member Vado entitled “We All Up In Here” features another production by araabMUZIK. Like the Diplomats “Salute” jump-off, the track pops off in a big way and further shows the Harlem emcee back on his grind.
Our backing of Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa has not been inconspicuous over here at EastofLA. It goes without saying that dope music merits apt coverage and that’s what’s been resultant of the Taylor Gang don’s grind over the past few years. With an unprecedented fan base in the hip-hop community and widespread influence on the internet, it shouldn’t come as a shock that Khalifa has topped MTV News‘ ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010′, surpassing over 19 other emcees in the voting process. Khalifa tallied almost twice as many votes as the follow-up Cash Money artist Nicki Minaj, with J. Cole, Travis Porter and Diggy Simmons rounding out the rest of the top five finalist round-up.
The 2010 FYF Fest (formerly known as F*ck Yeah Fest) line-up has been announced and boasts, as usual, a diverse array of indie acts ranging from lo-fi to electronic, to hardcore punk. Held annually at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, the event will take place on Labor Day weekend and although pre-sale tickets have long since sold out, the music fest is a damn good deal considering the extensiveness and quality of the roster. The event has sure come a long way since it’s humble beginnings (that used to incorporate one of the craziest and intense organized scavenger hunts in L.A.) and this year it’s bigger and better than ever.
