I don’t think any of us at East of L.A. have posted about FlyLo, so here it goes.

Flying Lotus will be listed as one of my favorite active producers. Whether it be his beats, remixes, or whatever, I am absolutely obsessed with this dude. And just recently, FlyLo released his second issue of his “LA EP” series and I am here just making sure you folks get your hands on some good music. In this issue, the likes of Ras G, Nosaj Thing, Samiyam and Mike Slott remix a few FlyLo tracks, and I certainly recommend that you guys purchase this EP.

Buy it here.

post Scarface | Emeritus | Can’t Get Right feat. Bilal

I’ve been hearing things hear n’ there about a new album from Scarface. Saw this over at nahright. Can’t Get it Right” featuring Bilal.  Not sure who Production wise, but its on point…   From the title Emeritus,  look up the word if you’r unfamiliar. Ha’.  Emeritus: “The term is used when a person of importance in a given profession retires, so that his or her former rank can still be used in his or her title.”    By that defintion Emeritus will be his last album ?  probably not…

post Pharcyde | “Passin’ Stalag Bye” DJ Gabe Real Mix (Mp3)

Two things that always feed my soul, some great Reggae, and some classic Pharcyde. DJ Gabe Real, being one of Southern Cali’s hardest working DJ’s, cooks up a condensed soup mash-up of both of my favorite nostalgic sounds, Stalag Riddim + Pharcyde’s “Passin’ Me By.” Make sure you put some clean water in that filthy bong before lighting up… cause that’s just nasty…

You can catch Gabe Real spinning weekly at Mo’ Fire Monday’s (Reggae /Hip Hop / Dub) -OR- our own parties Till Tuesday’s (Indie-Electro) & Ultra Friday’s (Top 40 / Dance)  in Riverside, CA. Check out some of the other mixes offered at his site.

post Ryan Leslie | “How It Was Supposed To Be” (Rmx Ft. Jadakiss) (Mp3)

November 28th, 2008

Ryan Leslie is the truth. Honestly the dopest R&B I’ve heard since early Craig David (circa 2000-2002, RIP to his music career). The only difference is that I’m pretty sure Ryan is going to have a strong presence in music for a long time to come, I mean his production is redonkulous, and I’ve been listening to this track on repeat for a few days now. Yeah, Yeah… the vocals could be stronger, but quite honestly to create great Pop / R&B records… better than average vocals, great songwriting & amazing production work will do the job. If I were investing in the future of muscians right now, my money would be in Ryan Leslie.

Check him freestyling on the keys below:

post Ludacris | Theater of The Mind | Album Review

November 28th, 2008

Filed under: Hip Hop — Gopi @ 12:37 pm

theater_of_the_mind.jpg

I was planning on writing a review for Theater of the Mind this weekend, but I just caught a good review over at The Rap Up by Rizoh. His “Verdict” is down below, check his site for the full track by track.

Verdict: Though Ludacris is one of the nastiest MCs to ever breathe on a mic, Theater of the Mind proves he still has trouble making an album that’s listenable from start to finish. Thankfully, the shitty songs are sequenced next to one another so you can skip them all at once. If you’re an avid Ludacris fan, nothing will deter you from buying this album and enjoying the hardbody beats. If you’re not already familiar with Luda’s work, Theater of the Mind is not for you.

post The Death of Battle Rapping (Rant)

November 28th, 2008

The Saurus Vs Dizaster Rap Battle Pt. 1

Is it me or has Battle Rapping been killed by Youtube? I mean come on, I couldn’t even sit through and watch the whole video above, its like a major pre-written, well researched, theatrical yelling match. I’m sure both The Saurus & Dizaster got jawns for days, but the whole “Fight Klub” style battles with no beat have always been pretty weak to me. I know at least some of these guys can freestyle & battle to a beat, I mean that was part of the excitement & skill. I’m sure most veteran emcees had a general idea of the most popular battle beats, but there was still that unknown of not knowing what the DJ was going to drop next and trying to see how fast the emcee could adapt & talk shit at the same time. Youtube was the nail in the coffin for the battle scene, now you got emcee’s researching battle cats every rhyme, bio and freaken genealogy before they see them, you got haters in the comments talking about “oh he used that line against so & so”… yeah so what!? You know how many times I’ve seen Supernatural rap about Sidekicks and iPhone’s out of peoples pockets? Does that mean he’s any less of a skilled emcee… (Rant over) Thoughts anyone?

Iron Mic - Eli Vs. Envy (aka “The Worst Battle Rap Ever”) << This is probably the most entertaining battle I’ve seen in ages!

post The Digger’s Vault | Tha Alkaholiks | Likwidation

November 28th, 2008

Tha Alkaholiks
Likwidation (1997) | 88 MB|

At one time the number one crew in Los Angeles and the west coast Tha Alkaholiks, aka Tha Liks, held it down for many years giving great Hip Hop shows and producing classic dope songs. J Ro, Tash & E Swift have definitely craved out a place in Hip Hop History for themselves.

From “Make Room” & “Daaam” to 2006’s “The Flute Song” The Liks have and can still deliver quality Hip Hop. Although they have disbanded in 2006 recently Tha Alkaholiks have regrouped and have been performing around the world.

Can we expect a sixth album of fresh Likwit material? Let’s hope so. We indeed in the west need to kill this hipster rap before it spreads any further and the Liks are just people to do it.

Liwidation

Likwidation is Tha Liks third release and just like their two previous albums 1993’s “21 & Over” and 1995’s “Coast To Coast” they bring dope party joints with hilarious wordplay.

At the time of this album’s release the West Coast scene was filled with rapper after rapper and group after group of studio gangstas rhymng over second rate Dr.Dre sounding G Funk beats. In this crowd Tha Alkaholiks definitely stood out with their party joints and funny rhymes.

The Standouts

Captian Hook, the third song off the album is the best joint off Likwidation. A reworked ‘More Bounce To Ounce’ sample and Indian sitar sounds drives this song.

Keep it Pourin is nice head nodding beat and Feel The Real is as well.

Aww Sh*t is the third best song off Likwidation. Hip Hop Drunkies featuring Ol Dirty Bastard being the second.

Contents unda Pressure is great song with that classic likwit sound and finishes off the album greatly.

“They can make party songs or flat out kick some of the funniest raps you’ve ever heard without sacrificing any credibility or selling out like other rappers.”

Now today’s Digger’s Vault is different as due my computer problems I’m not able to upload any songs to the eastofla server so sorry folks no songs to preview the album. However, I do have a link to a site where you can hear samples of all songs:
