post Adult Swim & Far Cry 2 | African Swim

October 31st, 2008

 africanswim.jpg

Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim has released online a FREE collection of rap tunes from MC’s & Hip Hop groups from throughout Africa called “African Swim” as promo for the new game Farcry2.

Indeed they deserve props for introducing this collection those who may have never heard African Rap/Hip Hop before but personally I feel this collection is a little weak. With 15 tunes on “African Swim” I only was feelin 8 of them…

We Are On Fire - Da L.E.S.
The Place I’m From - Rusty Dusty
Zingu 7- Zola
Organic Boom Bap - Etc.
Dangerous - Maggz
Bring it On -Cook
Kufa - Mapaputsi
Muthaland - Jozi

If you into the hipster type rap then you might digg more of joints than I did. Most of the tunes are in english but some are in African languages. Still it’s a nice little mix of what going with Rap in other parts of the world. I just wished they included more underground Hip Hop sounding tunes.

I didn’t upload any songs from the album because you can listen to all them on site….go to the site to hear and/or download the album.

post The Digger’s Vault | Questionmark Asylum

Questionmark Asylum
The Album (1995) |84 MB|

questionmark_asylum.jpg

Those who into The Pharcyde,The Fugess,ATCQ & the Heiroglyphics will enjoy this piece of classic material. Questionmark Asylum (Digge Doms, Eddie Black,Misstafiss,& Ding), the Washington DC based group, is one those groups who made a little noise in the industry but couldn’t for various reasons achieve much success. Like Dred Scott,Chino XL, Ras Kass and even now Royce DA 5″9′, Questionmark Asylum was forced into oblivion and one can only wonder what could have been.

The Album

Most of tunes on this release are pretty solid. They all got that early upbeat 90’s Hip Hop feel with a touch cool soulful stylings. A couple of notable joints are…

“Baby” is early 90’s joint produced by TLC’s producer Dallas Austin. TLC fans should recognize his style on this song.

“Love,Peace & Soul” is a go-go style song. Surprisingly I like it. I wasn’t into the Washington DC style music back in the day but this joint contains the right amount of soul and funk. The tune features Funk/soul/Go-Go legend Chuck Brown.

“Sweatin Me” is very reminiscent of Souls of Mischief’s classic song “93 Til Infinity”. A nice tune to throw into a 90’s Hip Hop mix….add it to your crates dee jays.

“Get With You-I’d Rather Be with You” is a remake of the classic 70’s song “I’d Rather Be With You” by Bootsy’s Rubber Band. This joint is basically a less profanity laced version of NWA’s “I’d Rather F*ck With You”.

The lesser joint on this LP is “Sex On The Brain”. It isn’t terrible but it’s not to my liking. One minor problem with this LP is it doesn’t contain the remix to “Hey Lookaway”. A tune every serious Hip Hop lover should have in their collection. The version on the album features Blackgirl, a female singing group with little success in the 90’s. The remix is way better. The song was remixed by EPMD’s Erick Sermon…an unbelievable cool joint. I uploaded the remix to EastofLa.com for you to hear and download.

Just released! My peoples from Houston That Kidd Cee, a true (I won’t say old, lol) school Turntablist/Scratch DJ has teamed with France’s Shaolin Killa B to produced a nice hot track that every Hip Hoppa should love.

“Shaolins Are Back” is the debut turntablist collaboration single of French producer Shaolin Killa B and American scratch dj/turntablist ThatKiddCee.
This bangin’ release combines the kung-fu, turntablist, electronic and hip hop influences of Shaolin and Cee into an incredible scratch-instrumental track!!! Definitely pushing the boundaries of turntablism to new, exciting heights, while also uniting the hiphop / experimental / turntablist scenes of France and the USA, showing how global the turntablist movement really is!!! These guys are already planning to bring more of their original styles on an EP in the near future, but for now, enjoy something brand new and refreshing for your ears!!!

post Andy Samberg | Ras Trent | SNL Digital Short (video)

October 29th, 2008

Filed under: Reggae, video — Gopi @ 10:43 am

Andy Samberg is the shit… I’m starting to get the feeling this guy was a real ass hip hop head when he was younger, cause since he’s been added to the Saturday Night Live staff the hip hop influenced skits have been all over the place & from my guess some of the most popular skits on the show (ie. Chronicles of Narnia, Natalie Portman Rap, Dick In A Box, Palin Rap). Samberg just dropped this digital short about “Ras Trent” pokes fun at that occasional college-kid that falls neck deep for that Rasta culture… funny ish, check it out below.

post Wale | Back to the Feature | “Warwick Avenue” ft. Duffy (prod. by Mark Ronson) (Mp3)

Here is a new single from the D.C. kid, produced by  Mark Ronson.  Ronson recently signed  Wale and Rhymefest to his label and is working with Wale on his freshman LP Entitled  Back to the Feature. Wale is a solid M.C., with a delivery that is full of swagger and style.  His remix of Justice- D.A.N.C.E. helped him take off with the hipster circuit and even gave him a cosign from the audacious crew.  Check the kid out..

October 28th, 2008

So everyone within like a 45 minutes of U.C. Riverside should really spend the early evening at U.C.R’s Barn cause their rocking with J*DaVey tommarow night for FREE. This duo has really has the most innovative hip hop fusion sound coming out of Southern California, and they’ve def paid their dues running circles around the local circuit. The Barn isn’t a bad place to check out music on Wednesday nights, they got beer, wine & finger foods + you don’t have to dig around in your wallet at the door. Show starts at 7:30pm, so find a date and act like you bought him or her a ticket… For you off-campus folk, once you get to UC Riverside, park in Lot 4 (and pay) then cross the street, you’ll see a sign that says “The Barn” along Campus Dr.

Holler at me if your going!

post Mick Boogie & Terry Urban | Viva La Hova - Jay-Z X Coldplay (Mixtape)

October 28th, 2008

Filed under: Hip Hop, Mixtapes — Gopi @ 12:41 pm

vivalahova.jpg

I mean I’m surprised someone hasn’t developed a blog dedicated to Jay-Z mashup mixtapes, they’d have content about every other day or so, haha. However, I’m really not complaining… I mean it just seems with everyone that drops the deejays just step up their game and put out one that’s even more dope.  I actually like DJ’s all reworking and mashing up similar projects, cause it really gives you a standard to judge the DJ’s on,  similar to all the Radiohead remixes that dropped recently.

In this mixtape Mick Boogie and Terry Urban link up to drop yet another sick mixtape. With the amount of material that Mick Boogie drops, I really wonder if he sleeps, he’s like the web 2.0 version of the mixtape king DJ Drama. This joint features beats inspired by Coldplay samples & Jay-Z’s vocals. The beats are put together by a slew of up & coming producers & DJs that I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about soon: The Kickdrums, 6th Sense, 9th Wonder, Mick Boogie, Cookin’ Soul, The Amps and Coldplay themselves. After the Jay-Z x Oasis mixtape that Cookin’ Soul put together, I needed another fix… and I just got my hit… I’d be very surpised & eternally grateful is someone can drop a hotter mixtape than this in 2008.

post Q Tip | The Renaissance | Album Review

October 27th, 2008

therenaissance.JPG

The Renaissance“, the new album from Kamal Fareed aka Q Tip is pretty much what you expect from him…..good jazzy souful hip hop. Did you really think Kamal would make a wack album? However I can’t really say this album is exceptional. It’s what you would expect and nothing more. There’s really nothing “special” about it but that doesn’t in no way say it’s bad. ATCQ fans should really enjoy this of course.

Now for the songs…

“Johnny Is Dead” starts off the album with an upbeat sound.

“Won’t Trade” is a funky track reminiscent of many Marley Marl joints from back in the day.

“Gettin Up”,”You”, “Shaka” and “I Believe”  featuring De Angelo are laidback cool head knodin joints. It’s the goodness you would expect from Q Tip.

“Official” is an upbeat jazzy/R & B track. The organ based bassline reminds me of “Get it Together” The Beastie Boys song off the Ill Communication album.

On “Dance On Glass” Q Tip throws a curve ball at the listeners. It begins with an one minute acapella rap before the beat comes in. Beatwise it’s one of the best tracks on this release. The song is incredibly and deliciously dope.

“Fight/Love” featuring Raphael Saadiq is pretty representative of the overall sound of the album. If you like that joint you’ll love this album. The sound of tracks don’t deviate from this type of jazzy souful hip hop. The exception being “Manwomanboogie” featuring Amanda Diva. It’s a soulful bboy break track you would expect the likes of DJ Z Trip would throw on in his set.

Much of the album sounds pretty much the same. All the songs are pretty much on point. There’s no fillers on this release. So there is really only two standout tracks.

“Move”, a J Dilla produced  fast paced groovy song I know most will feel. A good track to rock a party. “Life is Betta” featuring Norah Jones,..OMG… is an unbelievable soulful song on an incredible soulful album. Which is a hard feat to accomplish. It’s destined to be a classic.

From the beginning to the end Q Tip’s “The Renaissance” is solid release. It’s definitely worth your loot. The album is set to be released on November 4th but you can preorder now.
