The Knux are a really interesting group. Some critics pan them, saying their not pushing any limits that Outkast hasn’t already, others think their a breath of fresh air in the new school Hip Hop game. I’m personally pretty split, their first single “Cappuccino” that dropped earlier this Spring was pretty hot, the second to lesser extent, but I’m feeling the video they dropped for “Bang, Bang.” Also its pretty dope how musically inclined these two are, playing all of their own instruments and having full creative control of the album. Honestly, I just think their a young duo, still trying to find their sound and have mad potential, and with Jimmy Iovine & Interscope behind your back it’ll take a whole lot of ego to take that momentum away from you, but then again they do say some wyln’ ass shit like in this week’s featured LA Weekly article on the new L.A. Hip Hop Scene
“We were the first ones to do all this shit that people call hipster rap,” Krispy boasts, pulling the microphone closer for full effect. “We were the first ones with a major-label deal, the first ones to experiment with electronic music. Hell, we’re the reason that these labels started looking at people like this in the first place. Ask Steve Aoki, ask anyone who was there before they had 17-year-old kids in leggings showing up to the club. We were dressing like this when people were still wearing backpacks.” - L.A. Weekly 9/25/08
^^ That quote is a far out! First to fuck with electronic music? Hip Hop has been fucking with electronica since it’s advent, and literally hasn’t stopped since. First with a major-label deal? Thats not exactly something to brag about just yet, especially considering independant acts like The Cool Kids & LMFAO have more myspace plays on individual tracks then they have on their whole playlist.
It’ll be interesting to see how this album fares on the market, its called Remind Me in 3 Days, and drops Oct. 28th.
Here’s another track off of John Legend’s upcoming album Evolver. “No Other Love” features up and coming British singer Estelle. This is a really dope track, give it a listen if you want to hear Legend + Estelle with a reggae vibe.
Naledge of Kidz in the Hall is a serious ass emcee. If you don’t already know it, click on the mixtape cover to download his latest mixtape “Brainiac Society Vol. 1.” After the jump is complete track listing & below is the “Orange Pineapple Juice Freestyle” mp3.
Janelle Monae is killing it! She’s probably that amazing artist you have yet to hear, the taste makers are starting to call her the female Andre 3k, and for damn good reason. She has an amazingly fresh sound, and a super fresh image. Her music is incredibly creative and evokes themes and imagery that will have you thinking for a bit… Below is her new video “Many Moons” along side mp3’s of her first 3 singles…
This is a nutty Drum & Bass video of a bunch of people going apeshit in churches! The song is by Twisted Individual and is called “Rusty Sherif Badge” and was originally released in 2003. One of the more entertaining vids of the year… Tried tracking down the Mp3 for anyone interested but couldn’t find it! Sorry.
I don’t know how many John Legend fans hit up this site, but I happen to be a big one. I really loved his previous albums Get Lifted and Once Again. Legend’s next album Evolver also seems to be keeping up to par with quality. Here’s the latest track from Evolver entitled “Good Morning.” Enjoy
Q-Tip is doing some hot sh*t as of right now. I’m really excited about his upcoming album The Renaissance set to release Election Day (Nov. 4th)! Here’s his latest track featuring D’Angelo entitled “I Believe.” ENJOY homies!
Here is a track from Jean Grae’s latest album Jeanius which dropped July 8th. The album entirely is produced by legendary 9th Wonder and a few tracks by Khrysis. I gotta admit this track is moving, Jean tells a story about an abortion she got back in her teens and how she grew from that experience. Give it a listen
Sorry fellow EastofLa followers, school has just started up and I haven’t had the time to keep EastofLA updated. I’ll begin the day’s post with a music video entitled “Trouble Is” by Seattle duo Common Market off their latest album Tobacco Road.
