For those who have not caught wind yet, the new music video for Ed Banger’s sweethearts Justice for the hot track “Phantom Pt. II” from their debut album,†, leaked onto YouTube last week.
My thoughts: The Phantom video initially came as a pleasant surprise to me, as it was one of my favorite songs on the album, but ended up being somewhat mediocre (a ‘Justice’ engraved birthday candle? C’mon). The videos for “D.A.N.C.E.” and “We Are Your Friends” instantly became favorites of mine, so I expected a bit more for this track. Also, the video immediately struck me as in the same vein as The Postal Service’s “We Will Become Silhouettes” music video (with Justice’s vid sans artist cameos). An 80’s-esque home setting? Check. Cute kids to garners some ‘awww’s? Check.
* See for yourself: “We Will Become Silhouettes” Music Video. Same director perhaps?
When I studied abroad this past summer in the U.K., Brighton never had struck me as a music scene powerhouse, but proved itself a quaint locale for shows. Known mostly for its beach-side resorts and progressive community, the city was, at least, a stop for many tours by artists like Final Fantasy, Damien Rice, and even Japanese hardcore punk band FC FiVE.
Based out of Brighton, England, British Sea Power proves that the city offers a lot more than mediocre clubs and fish ‘n’ chips. The band’s upbeat brand of straight-forward, no frills attached rock immediately lends itself to comparisons with the likes of Sonic Youth and even Joy Division. Do You Like Rock Music?, the band’s latest effort (released in January) immediately demonstrates the band’s exceptional songwriting showcasing a healthy mix of Pixies-esque guitar work and the catchniess of The Arcade Fire. With labelmates like Emiliana Torrini and Islands, British Sea Power is grounded in the indie dynasty Rough Trade Records has created over the years and prove themselves to be formidable in such.
Tasty Tracks: “Lights Out For Darker Skies” and “Waving Flags”
Catch the band’s headlining U.S. tour now! British Sea Power will be performing tonight (2/28) at the Spaceland Club in L.A. with openers Colourmusicand White Denim.
L.A. Riots are enjoying a lot of success lately, doing live sets in just about every club & festival you can name, producing really hott official remixes to tracks by Kylie Minogue & VHS & Beta..not to mentioned featured at this years HEAT Festival. They recently put out their February mix and its filled with electro-dance goodness that’ll get anyone with a sense of rhythm moving. Peep the real sick heavy metal inspired cover art + the tracklisting, only wish it was 10-15 minutes longer!.
If you have a very crude sense of humor, taste for funky hip hop beats, and looking for something fun to listen to…then Time Machine’s Glow In The Dark Records just recently put out Shawn Jackson’s Boner Jamz ‘08 podcast. Check it out if your looking to change the tone of your Itunes collection! MP3 player and link below!
Just when I say it’s almost impossible for me to find good hip hop today, I start running across alot of good shit. The Film Skool Rejekts rattle off grimey lyrics that’ll put you back in 98′, envoking classic Mobb Deep & Boot Camp Clik, putting you back in that brooding gangster mood. Nothing progressive about the beats, just solid jazzy boom bap + raw lyrics. This is a must download, and support the artist when their real album drops.
So everyone and their mommas are chitty chatting about the new video by Kanye West for “Flashing Lights”…so is it madd genius or madd stupid?? The youtube comment battle continues….judge for yourself…it definitively is a departure from the high production of a video like the “Good Life.”
There are rumors this is a fake video, rest assured Universal Music Group posted this, but there are other rumors that this may be a teaser for a fuller video.
Hip Hop was the music that got me into music. I gave Hip Hop my all for the last 4 years and even I feel like things are in a lull, from the underground to the radio. Other than the recent Blu & Exile project I find it really hard to get excited about most indie Hip Hop projects and I’m always digging to find something new and fresh in 2008…and just when I think things really suck, Amplive of the Zion-I crew pleasantly surprises me …best of all…its available to download FREE! (you guys weren’t going to pay for it anyways! bastards)
Amplive (of Zion-I) releases his innovative Radiohead remix project , after stumbling over some cease & desists, Amp got permission to drop his Hip Hop fused remix album of Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” and the blogs are going bananas over it! It even features Hip Hop staples such as Too $hort, Chali2na & Del. Download your copy here. Or listen to some tracks below! Don’t forget to check out his newly crafted hyphy-banger for Keak Da Sneak - Fast (Nascar)
Props to Electrik Suicide for the new East of L.A. Look! Hope everyone likes, redone blog, with new redone logo’s…our image is set for 2008 baby! Look out for all the random shit it is that we do, events, music, streetwear, blogging…etc. etc. etc. theres no point really… =(
