post Lil Wayne l Kobe Bryant (mp3)

June 4th, 2009

Kobe Bryant just dropped 40 points along with 8 assists and 8 rebounds on the Orlando Magic in Game 1 of the 2009 NBA Finals.  So when I got home from work and found this mp3 waiting for me in my Facebook inbox, I was pleasently surprised. It’s a song by Lil Wayne about Kobe Bryant. I wasn’t expecting much because honestly, I am not the biggest Weezy fan. But I don’t know if its his skills or the high I’m still on after Game 1, but this song is the shit. Definitely something for any Lakers fan to bump for the rest of the season and throughout the summer.

Los Angeles is buzzing this weekend as it’s time once again for the UCLA Jazz Reggae Festival. This year is headlined by great acts like Erykah Badu, Mavado’s first ever LA performance and the great De La Soul. I have been lucky enough to see De La Soul perform before and it is definitely a great experience. This weekend’s should be even more full of life and energy as they perform in front of a massive crowd. It was a coincidence then that I recently ran across a mixtape including some of De La Soul’s best songs. Courtesy of East Of LA’s resident Hamza and his blog Domeshots and Fat Laces, here is DJ Manifest’s De La Soul Train of Thought. Below is the track listing and link to the mixtape. Brush up on your De La Soul, pick up your Jazz Reggae Festival tickets and get ready for a great weekend of music.

post The Cool Kids and Don Cannon l Gone Fishing (mixtape)

May 5th, 2009

Filed under: Fresh Picked Weekly, Hip Hop, Mixtapes — J.Paz @ 7:40 am

Gone Fishin’

The Cool Kids released a new mixtape yesterday alongside DTP’s Don Cannon. Gone Fishing is a solid release from The Cool Kids. They continue to improve, which is weird to say because they came out so strong, and become a continuously entertaining duo that will hopefully be around for years to come. “Champions” is the best track on the mixtape, with “Jump Rope” ft Tennille being a great collab and along with “The Art of Noise” and “Tune Up” being some of the more mellow and slower paced tracks that The Cool Kids have put out. But I was feeling it, a change of pace from their initial releases that were fast paced and reckless. Check out the mp3s below and make sure to download the mixtape. Enjoy!

post MF DOOM LOVE FEST (mp3 + video)

April 17th, 2009

Who loves MF DOOM? East of LA LOVES MF DOOM. Born Like This has provided a whole slew of new DOOM tracks that has been on constant rotation for weeks now. The Supervillian continues to produce and put out amazing beats with rhymes that will have you rewinding the track just to catch his metaphors and similies that get thrown out like he was born speaking in rhymes. A few months back, some people were tired of DOOM. With the double booked shows with impostors and no shows some people wanted his head on a stick. But we didn’t understand the anger. He’s the Supervillian, the Mad Villian, he wears a mask like his favorite super villian Dr. Doom! He’s been telling you for years he was going to jack you. And then he did. And we love him for a well needed dosage of art at its truest form. Recently, Gopi passed along a video with one of our other favorite emcees, Mos Def, ranting about his love for DOOM. So here it is for you to enjoy along with 4 DOOM tracks that have been on the playlist at my pad for weeks now.

Mos should start doing infomercials. he just entertained me through a 7 min commercial for doom and has me downloading albums lol

-My friend Azadeh, a new MF DOOM fan.

post Murs l Who’s The Boss? (video)

February 17th, 2009

Filed under: Fresh Picked Weekly, Hip Hop, Music Videos — J.Paz @ 1:24 pm

Murs

So in the middle of the 50 Cent/Rick Ross “beef”, apparently Rick Ross has used a Murs beat to address 50. Backpackers every lashed out in unison. To make matters worse, Rick Ross said he didn’t know who Murs was during this track. So what is the logical response, Murs doing a track over a Rick Ross beat. What resulted wasn’t necessarily a diss on Ross but more of a oppurtunity for Murs to showcase his skills and talk about himself. Now, honestly I have never been a huge Murs fan but he does a solid catalog of hits but this video is thoroughly entertaining. And I gotta say, I agree with his line about “El Maniaco” Manny Ramirez. Enjoy!

Jay Electronica has been become quite a sensation over this last year. Thanks to the mixtape entitled “What the Fuck is a Jay Electronica” most people at least recognize the name and give him credit for a sound that reminds some of the good ol’ days of Hip Hop. To me, his sound is straight-forward with great production and lyricism that you should not be sleeping on. Check out his latest track below, I dare you not to nod your head.
