In Buddhism (No I’m not a buddhist) Ignorance is defined as one part delusion and one part confusion.
We don’t perceive the truth of how things actually are directly, without distortion or illusion.Instead we insist on seeing thigs as we would like them to be.
Lama Surya Das - Awakening The Buddha Within
It’s time to face facts “The Digger’s Vault” has been a failure. It’s been akin to being a person telling a bar full of patrons the evils of alcohol. Truth indeed but wrong message, wrong time and wrong place. So I decided to end “The Digger’s Vault” on eastofla.com. Instead I will refocus my efforts on posting new music rather than classics and gems from the past.
Truthfully 99% of what the music industry releases is straight garbage. However, there are many independent artists producing quality music. I intend on bringing something new, or relative new, every week to EOLA. Unlike now where I would occasionally post something new weekly.
Now for this week’s and the final Digger’s Vault. We leave at the beginning with Hip Hop first mainstream superstars. The highly influential and most respected group in hop hop history….
For alot of younger heads when it comes Run DMC you simply had to be there to understand. Before mainstream or even “urban” radio, before MTV or VH1 decided to play Hip Hop videos there was one group known throughout Hip Hop culture worldwide as the “Kings Of Rock”.Three guys from Queens, a borough at that time not known for producing any Hip Hop greats, were the first to bring the raw and ruggedness as well, dare I say, swagger (I hate that word) to Hip Hop’s growing subculture. For certainty other groups were known at the time The Cold Crush Brothers, Fearless Four, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five but none like Run DMC along with Jam Master Jay captivated the Hip Hop masses as they did.
They had a special chemistry and a sound unlike other groups of the time. Their stripped down bare essentials sound represented the street not a slick marketable product.
Other groups at the time still were experimenting with tweaking disco-like music and rapping over it.Yet others preferred to experiment more with new equipment and sounds. However Run DMC and their producers, the “King of Rap” himself, Kurtis Blow and Davy DMX blended musicianship (both Kurt & Davy are talented musicians) with a raw stripped down sound. The end result of Kurt’s and Davy’s production was something hypnotic and even addictive.
Jam Master Jay’s influence on Hip Hop Deejays, myself included, cannot be matched be anyone with exceptions being Grandmaster Flash, Grandwizard Theodore & DJ Qbert. For many he was the first DJ to actually seen scratching live.
The first nationwide Hip Hop tour called The Fresh Festival aka The Fresh Fest in 1985 brought Hip Hop heavyweights Whodini, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow and Run DMC to many cities throughout the US. For many this was not only their first Hip Hop concert but first concert experience period.
The excitement of seeing people who you viewed as like yourself perform live and perform incredibly well (unlike most performers today) was as good as it got. Whodini’s DJ Grandmaster Dee stole many a show from headliner Kurtis Blow. Most nights, however, Run DMC and Jam Master Jay’s skills on the turntables stole the show and ultimately the tour.
Until his murder of 2002 Jay was a figure who every Hip Hop deejay had as their blueprint or role model of what could be. A kind of Obama for Deejays. It may sound funny but believe me when I say back in mid 1980’s Jay created that kind of excitement and enthusiasm Obama created but for Deejays and those wanting to become one.
As lyricists Run & DMC weren’t the best but what made them standout above all others were their delivery & chemistry. Their tag team style of rhyming though done before was never done with so much style. The MC’s who used this tag team style before, most memorably The Cold Crush Brothers, were entertainers while Run & DMC were rappers.
They weren’t so much as trying to entertain you but as to spit rhymes over beats. This was evident in their aggressive delivery.
All in all Joseph Simmons,Darryl McDaniels, Jason Mizell better known as RUN DMC and Jam Master Jay craved out a place not only in Hip Hop history and the music industry but in US history as the ambassadors of a culture that change the world.
Now I have something special for you courtesy of 238 Beats I have a recording of Run DMC live on Mr. Magic’s Radio show in 1986. Download Here
And I have the Run DMC - Greatest Hits for you as well.

O’shea Jackson better know to world as Ice Cube came on scene back 1987 with a little known group called CIA.
I first heard Cube as most people did with NWA’s “Dope Man“. Back in 1987 you couldn’t go nowhere without hearing that song. It was indeed an underground success.
From music to films to television Cube has done what only few Hip Hoppas have done..find and maintain success in entertainment field.
Today’s there’s talk about how supposedly Cube has went soft. I’m not buying it. He is definitely not the angry voice he was a twenty something. He has grown and matured but he can still bring it to table and match talents with anyone.
Now for this album I’m hitting you with today. Ice Cube’s third solo album Death Certificate I got say this is one of the best Hip Hop albums ever! This is my 3rd favorite hip hop albums of all time behind DJ Revolution’s “In 12’s We Trust” and The Roots “Do U Want More?“.
This 1991 release is raw, funky, and lyrically & musical on point. Like Illmatic by Nas and Wu Tang Clan’s Enter the 36 Chambers it is one those albums you have to hear at least once in a lifetime.
One of the most controversial albums to be release. It’s doubtful if such album were produced today it would be released and supported by music industry like Cube’s Death Certificate was. If you ask me and it is exactly what a Hip hop album should sound like…raw & powerful.
“Now pop in that dusty version of “Death Certificate” and listen to a man who in wholly invested in his cultural, socioeconomic and ideological milieus, reminding us all why Hip Hop is important, and what power of expression it holds for those justifiably pissed off with something to say.”

The trio known as Poor Righteous Teachers, Wise Intelligent, Father Shaheed & Culture Freedom burst on scene when Pro-black Nationalism was the defining message of Hip Hop. Along with like-minded groups Public Enemy and X Clan PRT used their music not for self aggrandizement but to promote a positive message.
How far have times changed from then til now.
“Without a doubt, we came at a good time. When hip hop was pure”
Wise Intelligent - 2006 Interview - cocaineblunts.com
With a strong sense of self, a touch of reggae stylings and the teachings of the Nation Of Gods and Earths PRT produced incredible songs of goodness and positivity. Hailing from New Jersey as opposed to New York PRT brought a different spin on the sound and message of the day.
Leanings towards reggae then the east coast hardcore of the day the Poor Righteous Teachers was able to produce powerful music with message yet bring something new to scene.
Unfortunately PRT is no more after four albums 1990’s Holy Intellect, 1991’s Pure Poverty, 1993’s Black Business and 1996’s New World Order they disbanded. However, Wise Intelligent still releases new music 2007’s The Talented Timothy Taylor being his latest material.
If you’re into “conscious” Hip Hop then you should know PRT’s music and if you enjoy great beats with a touch of reggae and positivity then by all means check some Poor Righteous Teachers.
I got something special for you instead of posting a classic album I have a mix of PRT tunes. This mix done by DJ Books is perfect for those who want experience that which is Poor Righteous Teachers.

Key Kool & DJ Rhettmatic
Kozmonautz (1995) | 80 MB|
Before the success of what would be known as the megagroup The Visionaries Kikuo Nishi & Nazreth Nizra better known as Key Kool & DJ Rhettmatic joined forces to produce an album in 1995.
It is indeed a treat to go back into history to hear the beginnings of legends. This is one album for your collection.
With this album Key & Rhett brought that funky west coast underground Hip Hop sound to the masses. This album was that shot in dark, that spark, that lit the west coast underground Hip Hop scene on fire.
Before this album’s release the west coast Hip Hop scene was in a little daze and directionless. With all the “mc’s” in southern California area trying to be studio gangstas. It was rare to hear a mc spit something not involving killin somebody. B Boys like Zulu Gremlin and old school DJ’s like Rob One and Mark Luv were still doing their things respectively. But since 1990 culturally Hip Hop was different. It lost some of that communal feeling.
Behind the scenes things were to starting to formulate. “Turntablism” came on the scene. Graf Writer Hex opened his Hip Hop shop, he even got a little shine in Kid Frost’s La Raza video, and there was more B Boys than previous years. Hip Hop Fashion/record store Beat Non Stop (now renamed the Temple Of Boom) opened up as well. However there no direction to unify the west coast Hip Hop scene. Until this album arrived at a time when everything was falling into place for a west coast Hip Hop revival.
I remember first hearing “Can U Hear It?”, The first single from the album, in a mix by DJ Icy Ice on 92.3 the Beat (I still have this mix on cassette) back in 1995. It was different than what he was playing but yet it fit and I remember listening to words and thinking the emcee was on point. I searched for this song and found it was track by DJ Rhettmatic from The Beat Junkies and unknown emcee named Key Kool.
Key Kool’s verbal skill at the time was in it’s infancy as compared to other MC’s in now classic song “E=Mc5″ (the b side of “Can U Hear It?” 12 inch). However, on this album he was able to produce a well respected and received song “Reconcentrated”. Especially amongst the Asian community and surprising academia.
Key-Kool’s lyrical thesis on the incarceration of Japanese in America during World War II, Reconcentrated, has been used in classrooms of such prestigious universities such as NYU, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Loyola University Chicago, Cal Poly Pomona, UC Irvine, UC Davis, to name a few.
upabove.com
The overall sound of this release is a mixture of early 90’s Hip Hop and what can now can be known as the west coast underground Hip Hop sound. Some of songs will remind you of the subdued sounds of The Beatnuts (especially of the remixes on “The Spot“)
DJ Rhettmatic’s cuts, of course, are on point throughout this release. But sadly there isn’t any DJ tracks like Lacerations on the Visionaries “Pangaea” album.
However on this release there is the very first appearance of the members of what would known as the Visionaries on the entitled song “Visionaries (Stop Actin Scary)”.
This album is special for us on the west coast and especially southern California. This release gave a soundtrack to what could be and what eventual would be.
Young Hip Hoppas producing and releasing their own music. People not owned and controlled by the major labels and who had a REAL connection to local Hip Hop culture. This paved the way for Rock the Bells,We The People & Paid Dues Festivals. As well as a host of new Hip Hop groups like Jurassic 5 and The Black Eyed Peas. It paved the way for many Hip Hop events around the west coast. Back in them days having a choice of more than two Hip Hop events to attend on any given weekend was a rarity. This made a statement that Hip Hop culture wasn’t dead. It was still alive and well and thriving.
With all the things happening in that era it was a matter of time before something would come along and sparked the scene but as fate would have it it was this duo and album that made people take notice and move into one direction. Hip Hop for us by us.
Can U Hear It?

DJ Quik
Rhythm-al-ism (1998) | 64MB|
Compton’s own DJ Quik has been making great music since he first stepped on the scene back in 1990. His first album the classic Quik Is The Name spawned the great party jam Tonite.
Despite Quik ripping off someone else’s song and claiming credit (Truth Hurts “Addictive” stolen from UMI 10’s Kaaliyon Ka Chaman) through the years Quik has produced a number of good songs. I think most will agree Tony! Toni! Tone! ’s “Let’s Get Down” is classic feel good joint.
This album features appearances by El Debarge, AMG, Playa Hamm, Peter Gunz, HI-C and the return of Second II None.
With strong positive critic reviews and great word of mouth this album still didn’t go platinum. Which is very surprising since many who wouldn’t have thought they would became Quik fans after hearing this release.
I can’t really tell you any standout tracks on this release because every one of the songs is straight goodness. If you don’t have this album in your collection then you collection isn’t complete. This is the real deal: Hip Hop,R & B and G Funk, all combined into greatness.

Tha Alkaholiks
Likwidation (1997) | 88 MB|
At one time the number one crew in Los Angeles and the west coast Tha Alkaholiks, aka Tha Liks, held it down for many years giving great Hip Hop shows and producing classic dope songs. J Ro, Tash & E Swift have definitely craved out a place in Hip Hop History for themselves.
From “Make Room” & “Daaam” to 2006’s “The Flute Song” The Liks have and can still deliver quality Hip Hop. Although they have disbanded in 2006 recently Tha Alkaholiks have regrouped and have been performing around the world.
Can we expect a sixth album of fresh Likwit material? Let’s hope so. We indeed in the west need to kill this hipster rap before it spreads any further and the Liks are just people to do it.
Liwidation
Likwidation is Tha Liks third release and just like their two previous albums 1993’s “21 & Over” and 1995’s “Coast To Coast” they bring dope party joints with hilarious wordplay.
At the time of this album’s release the West Coast scene was filled with rapper after rapper and group after group of studio gangstas rhymng over second rate Dr.Dre sounding G Funk beats. In this crowd Tha Alkaholiks definitely stood out with their party joints and funny rhymes.
The Standouts
Captian Hook, the third song off the album is the best joint off Likwidation. A reworked ‘More Bounce To Ounce’ sample and Indian sitar sounds drives this song.
Keep it Pourin is nice head nodding beat and Feel The Real is as well.
Aww Sh*t is the third best song off Likwidation. Hip Hop Drunkies featuring Ol Dirty Bastard being the second.
Contents unda Pressure is great song with that classic likwit sound and finishes off the album greatly.
“They can make party songs or flat out kick some of the funniest raps you’ve ever heard without sacrificing any credibility or selling out like other rappers.”
Hip Hop Galaxy.com
Now today’s Digger’s Vault is different as due my computer problems I’m not able to upload any songs to the eastofla server so sorry folks no songs to preview the album. However, I do have a link to a site where you can hear samples of all songs:

Eat At Whitey’s (2000) |100 MB|
The first bonafide White MC with skills. Everlast has had a diverse musical career. From laidback rappin as part of Ice T’s Rhyme Syndicate to reemerging as a hardcore Irish brawler in House Of Pain to folk influenced solo joints to now being a member of La Coka Nostra.
From his early days with Ice T’s Rhyme Syndicate to House Of Pain I always been a fan of Everlast’s. When he changed up his style and fused more folk , pop and rock with Hip Hop some felt it was departure from the “real” Everlast. However I liked the vibe and feel of his new sound.
“It’s like, I’m getting older so let me strip down, let me take some of this armor off and let people look at a human being, a man.”
Everlast Interview 1998 - totallyla.com
From his conversion to Islam in 1996 to a life threatening surgery in 1997. It’s only normal for an artist to experience such profound changes in their life and grow musically.
“It’s like, yo, as you get older, things change. Can’t be that same dude forever. I’m not trying to be Keith Richards and just be worn out and torn up at the age of 50. I’m going to slow down, especially when I’ve had health problems and stuff. I’m just trying to slow down and be all I can be for as long as I can be it.”
Everlast Interveiw 1998 - totallyla.com
Mr. White aka Everlast is one of those artists either you’re feel or you’re don’t. Me, personally I’m feelin his music. Though not so much his new album 2008’s Love, War & Ghost Of Whitey Ford
Eat At Whitey’s
Now I have say this is one of my favorite albums. This is Everlast’s third solo album but only his second with the new sound. While his second release Whitney Ford Sings The Blues (1998) contains more of a Hip Hop flavor. This album, as well as Ev’s fourth album White Trash Beautiful (2004) , contains more of mixture of Folk,R & B & Hip Hop.
This cd right here took awhile to gain success but it is definitely something to check. It has laidback folksy vibe but it does have an nice Hip Hop feel to it as well. Which isn’t easy to blend together but Everlast does it perfectly.
Eat At Whitey’s features guest appearances by N’Dea Daveport, Cee lo Green, Warren Hayes, Carlos Santana, B Real, Kurupt and Rahzel.
“I Can’t Move “ is my favorite joint off this release but The Alchemist produced “Deadly Assassins” ft B Real is out of this world as well. My favorite line off Deadly Assassins:
“Word To Rob One he used to like the big ladies” **
The Fred Wreck produced “One,Two” ft Kurupt is one of my favorites on this album as well.
Two other good songs are the incredible sensual tune “Love For Real” ft N’Dea Davenport, formally of the Brand New Heavies and the rock infused downtempo “Babylon Feeling” ft Carlos Santana.
If you’re not an fan of Everlast’s music I would ask why not? As an artist he grows musically and produces quality tunes. So do yourself a favor and check out Eat At Whitey’s as well Everlast’s other albums and I know you won’t be disappointed.
“I’d rather be the best artist that I can be even if that means sometimes taking risks that people don’t get or going against the grain a little bit. I want to leave behind a collection of work that maybe people will talk about you fondly when you’re gone.”

Ras Kass, the legendary underground west coast MC is one of those who name is always mentioned when the topic of who’s the best MC comes up. Ras is a testament to the fact that it takes more then just extraordinary talent to blow up in the music industry. Kind of the opposite of Souljah Boi (talent not necessary to succeed on the rap industry).
What will it take for a great emcee like Ras to make into the mainstream? I don’t know and I wish I did considering what kind of music is popular now.
I plan on adding my name to the list of (credible) great rap stars. BIG, 2pac, Rakim, KRS-1, Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem, etc…. without being shot, killed or dying poor and under-appreciated. HOLLA!
- hiphop-elements
Despite his lack of major success Ras stil continues to make dope Hip Hop. Recently he hooked with Wu’s Killah Priest, Battle MC Canibus & Tha Dogg Pound’s Kurupt to form the Four Horsemen in 2003. He also runs his own label called RE UP Entertainment and just released his album called Razzy Kazzy back in February of this year. Say what you will at 35 years old Ras is not giving up pursing success the music industry and all us true Hip hop fans thank him for that.
The album I’m schoolin ya’ll to today is Ras Kass’s third LP released in 2002. His previous albums 1996’s”Soul Of Ice” and 1998’s “Rasassination” had a more underground sound than this album, Goldyn Chyld but the more commercial sound is not too far of departure from his previous works. As the sound on his two previous albums were considered commercial back when they were released.
Goldyn Chyld has appereances from Mya, Phraoh Monche, Busta Rhymes, Dr Dre, DJ Kay Sly,Xzibit, Saaafir Nate Dogg, Bad Azz & Jelly Roll. This LP is loaded with producers like Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Scott Storch, Rocwilder, Hi Tek, Battlecat & DJ Khalil and Kon Artist from D12.
This album wasn’t exactly released as was leaked on the internet. Many of the songs on the LP are from another unreleased album “Van Gogh”. Ras explains the situation in an interview in 2003:
“After 4 years, I had finally gotten Priority to (semi) believe in my music enough to release an album titled “Goldyn Child”. I caught a case and was sentenced to jail time but given an extension more than adequate to fulfill my part of the deal, 6mths. Priority agreed we’d continue, until they found out Dr. Dre didn’t want his song to be the first single. The agreement I had with Priority Records was to make the title song, ‘Goldyn Chyld’ (produced by Premier), my first single. Priority went BEHIND MY BACK (draggin their feet on the ‘Goldyn Chyld’ single) and uried to change the plan! Dre said no, I said no. They then waited 2 weeks before I was to turn myself in and told me to “go fuck yourself we ain’t puttin your record out”.
- hiphop-elements.com
Besides the controversey this is still a nice intro to Ras Kass for those not in the know.
Some gems to look for on this album is “FucQup” produced by Scott Storch and“C What I C” ft Pharaoh Monche. Plus the “Goldyn Chyld Remix” produced by DJ Premier.
I also included a couple bonus tracks from Ras’ previous albums. I included “Nature Of The Threat” (probably the Best Hip Hop song ever written) and the very first song recorded by Ras Kass “Won’t Catch Me Runnin”. As well as the original “Goldyn Chyld” produced by Dr. Dre off the “Van Gogh” album.
NOTE: Despite what the pic says this album is NOT mixed by Kid Capri. This was the only image of the album cover I could find.

In case some of you were wondering why this post is alot shorter than my previous Digger’s Vault. I had a little problem what I intended to post and due to time restraints I had to scrabble to find something else. I’ll hit you with my original intended post nice week.
Cypress Hill
Stash (2002) |31 MB|
This is a remix EP of Cypress Hill tunes released in 2002. I’m sure many die hard cypress fans know about this but there is probably many more who don’t. “Stash” only contains six songs but it’s definitely worth adding to your collection. A true gem. It’s unbelievable how Alchemist could create a deep funky “Rap Superstar” remix. I don’t know about you but that Soul Assassins sound has me feenin like a dope fiend. I can’t get enough of it! Download this and enjoy some Cypress Hill this weekend.

Questionmark Asylum
The Album (1995) |84 MB|

Those who into The Pharcyde,The Fugess,ATCQ & the Heiroglyphics will enjoy this piece of classic material. Questionmark Asylum (Digge Doms, Eddie Black,Misstafiss,& Ding), the Washington DC based group, is one those groups who made a little noise in the industry but couldn’t for various reasons achieve much success. Like Dred Scott,Chino XL, Ras Kass and even now Royce DA 5″9′, Questionmark Asylum was forced into oblivion and one can only wonder what could have been.
The Album
Most of tunes on this release are pretty solid. They all got that early upbeat 90’s Hip Hop feel with a touch cool soulful stylings. A couple of notable joints are…
“Baby” is early 90’s joint produced by TLC’s producer Dallas Austin. TLC fans should recognize his style on this song.
“Love,Peace & Soul” is a go-go style song. Surprisingly I like it. I wasn’t into the Washington DC style music back in the day but this joint contains the right amount of soul and funk. The tune features Funk/soul/Go-Go legend Chuck Brown.
“Sweatin Me” is very reminiscent of Souls of Mischief’s classic song “93 Til Infinity”. A nice tune to throw into a 90’s Hip Hop mix….add it to your crates dee jays.
“Get With You-I’d Rather Be with You” is a remake of the classic 70’s song “I’d Rather Be With You” by Bootsy’s Rubber Band. This joint is basically a less profanity laced version of NWA’s “I’d Rather F*ck With You”.
The lesser joint on this LP is “Sex On The Brain”. It isn’t terrible but it’s not to my liking. One minor problem with this LP is it doesn’t contain the remix to “Hey Lookaway”. A tune every serious Hip Hop lover should have in their collection. The version on the album features Blackgirl, a female singing group with little success in the 90’s. The remix is way better. The song was remixed by EPMD’s Erick Sermon…an unbelievable cool joint. I uploaded the remix to EastofLa.com for you to hear and download.
