Here’s a little something to smooth you out. Asked by The Couch Sessions to produce their first ever mixtape Washington DC’s Supa Qool Uncle Q mixed a great collection of downtempo and soulful tunes from Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano.

A Tribute to Yukimi Nagano, focusing on the the trailblazing career of the Swedish vocalist and lead singer of the group Little Dragon. In addition to her work with the world-renowned group, Yukmi has a long track record of incredible music, mixing her loves of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Trip-Hop, and R&B. Her sultry voice has graced projects from all over the world, from Swedish Jazz duo Koop and Japan’s Shuya Okino, to Brooklyn’s Ge-ology.

post Phoenix Stripped Down on La Blogotheque | “1901″, “Lisztomania/One Too Many”, “Long Distance Call” (Live)

December 4th, 2009

Phoenix

We’ve all heard of the French indie-darlings Phoenix by now. If you don’t think you have, turn on your TV for even half an hour and you’re sure to see a fast-paced urban-inspired car commercial blasting “1901″. Their abrupt rise to fame isn’t a fluke and I highly doubt that even after the proverbial dust surrounding the band’s latest release, “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” settles, that we’ve seen the last of these dance-rock veterans.

And now, it’s their turn to share their music without all of the frills of post-production and electric instrumentation, as the celebrated documentary-styled music sessions La Blogotheque covers the band in their home-country of France (more specifically in the streets of Paris). Similar to how the band recorded a fun little video with the skyline of Paris in the digital backdrop of their Mac recording which they had posted to their blog awhile back, the Blogotheque sessions has given the band the chance to do it proper.

Without further ado:

post Beck x Charlotte Gainsbourg | Heaven Can Wait (Music Video)

December 3rd, 2009

Filed under: Alternative, Folk, Indie, Music Videos, Progressive, Rock, video — Andrew @ 11:50 pm

Beck and Charlotte Gainsbourg’s new collaboration (an album to be released in January entitled, IRM) on the horizon, a music video for the single, “Heaven Can Wait” has been released.

Now despite the fact that I haven’t watched very many music videos in the past year (aside from glances at some shitty Lady GaGa ones that some friends have played in my presence), I’m of the opinion that this has definitely gotta be one of the best of the year.

Peep it for yourself:

post Jennings | Doorway and Surrender

October 23rd, 2009

Filed under: Alternative, Indie, Music Videos, Pop — Hamza21 @ 5:19 pm

Storybook EP cover

Hauntingly soulful is one description that come to mind when listening to Jennings.

“She has this big, gorgeous voice that is full of timbre and character and makes you want to listen over and over again.”
Wildy Haskell - Wildy’s World

Influenced by Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, Mary Jennings has a voice that captures the listener and doesn’t let go. The Nashville singer/songwriter brilliantly mixes piano driven pop with soulful singing and a touch of electronica. This eclectic mix of genres had Cabaret Voltaire’s Chris Watson remark:

“If Moby and Alicia Keys had a child, I believe it would be [her].”

I would say Jennings is what Amy Lee (Evanescence) would sound like if she made a pop album. Haunting beautiful vocals that you can’t get out of head.

Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher has quit Oasis yet again. Here’s his personal statement from their website:

A STATEMENT FROM NOEL

28 August 2009

“It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.

“Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan.”

What a surprise?

post Mew - “Introducing Palace Players” (MP3 + Official Music Video) and “Beach”

August 5th, 2009

Mew

Danish pop-rock/indie innovators Mew are set to release their new full-length CD, No More Stories Are Told Today I’m Sorry They Washed Away No More Stories The World Is Grey I’m Tired Let’s Wash Away (perhaps the longest album title in awhile, right?) on August 25.

The first single from the album, “Introducing Palace Players” exhibits the band in a new and improved form. Extracting their pop sensibilities from the now classic record, Frengers, and utilizing their aptitude for incorporating tinges of shoegaze into their works, the new CD demonstrates a mature sound that is not likely to disappoint new and old listeners alike. On a personal note, I really can’t get over how well the band hybridizes seemingly prog-rock time changes and mathiness with an extremely accessible pop outer.

Here’s the official music video for “Introducing Palace Players”:

Some dates on the band’s upcoming tour in support of the new record, including dates with NINE INCH NAILS on their farewell tour:

Paradise Rock Club Boston, Massachusetts
Aug 24 2009 8:00P
Music Hall of Williamsburg Brooklyn, New York
Aug 26 2009 8:00P

Aug 29 2009 8:00P

Sep 1 2009 8:00P

Palladium with NIN Los Angeles, California
Sep 3 2009 8:00P
The Henry Fonda Theatre with NIN Los Angeles, California
Sep 4 2009 8:00P
The Independent San Francisco, California

Also included in this post is another snippet from the new record, “Beach”. The song is a strong contrast to the single, and like the title emanates, it’s definitely one to relax/cruise to.
