Inspired by the album In My Element by Jazz pianist Robert Glasper French producer Dela reworks samples from the album into a new jazzy Hip Hop instrumental creation.
“Some of the interludes are basically hip-hop beats already… So.. I was like, I can’t sample the whole album and get away with it, can I ? Can I ??? I felt guilty already, so I figured I might as well do it, but call it a remix album or something.. And I started making these beats. So there you go now.”Dela
If you never heard of Dela before you certainly have been missing out. There are many artists and producers that make jazz influenced Hip Hop but very few as good as Dela.Listen/Download: The Robert Glasper Beat Tape (62 MB)

A small teaser video has been posted recently for Parisian producer, Onra, in anticipation of his upcoming record, Long Distance. Presumably, the clips in the video are from the album and if that is true, the release is sure to be one of his strongest and novel yet. The French beatmaker is widely known for his past works including the Chinoiseries and his collaboration with fellow French producer, Quetzal, Tribute.
Check out the video here:
Long Distance is set for release by All City Records in May.
Also, check out one of Onra’s highly lauded beats, “The Anthem” here.

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law and money.
Independent Lens
Debuting tonight on PBS TV’s Independent Lens will be a documentary many around the interweb have been waiting to see. Is sampling a crime? Can anyone really own a sound? I would say no but the film delves into the concept from both perspectives and in fair and honest way.
Copyright Criminals will feature interviews with DJ Q Bert, Mix Master Mike, Pete Rock, Chuck D, George Clinton and the original funky drummer himself Clyde Stubblefield.
For your local listings check HERE and see the trailer below.
Also look into the book Pirate’s Dillema by Matt Mason it touches upon this issue in broader context.

Remix or reworkings? I would say reworkings of classic and not so classic tunes by the band called The Remix Project (Apple Juice Kid, Matt Brandau, Brevan Hampden, Mark Wells, Dana Chell).
In the vain of El Michel’s Affair and Breakstra The Remix Project drops some heavy jazz stylings in this 22 song mixtape. With The Apple Juice Kid at the helm expect to be delighted by some smooth sounds.
“The sizzling instrumental hip-hop covers of The Remix Project–four crack jazz musicians with disgustingly developed chops–will let you enjoy the party at night and not regret your choice for a musical paramour in the morning.”
