Refreshing is what comes mind when I first heard this song by Canada’s Wio K. The track, the second single off the EP “The Craftman” featuring the guest appearances from UK emcees Serocee and Ty is reggae flavored head nodding beat that I’m sure you’ll love. This just what you need to kick you weekend off.
DJ Gabe Real rocks our weekly Friday night jam here in Riverside, CA… and for good reason. Being one of the most experienced DJ’s the Southland has to offer, he struts his versatility with his newest mix, A Hot Mess. An ecletic mix of Reggae, Breaks, Electro & Rock, that’ll keep you moving! Don’t sleep on Gabe’s production, remixes throughout it, not to mention the very talented & bueatiful Jefferson Dejesus laying down vocals on many of those tracks.
Gabe is keeping busy, if your lucky enough to be camping at Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival this weekend catch his set Thursday night in the Dome, along side Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Busy P & more. Keep an eye and ear open for Jefferson Dejesus who is working alongside Gabe on various projects. The two drop a very exclusive bonus mp3, a cover of “Michelle” by the Beatles (originally Paul McCartney on the lead vocals) in advance to the Southland’s pilgrimage to the desert this weekend.
Bob Marley would be 64 today! You know how people ask you those hypothetical get to know you questions like, “If you were on stranded island, and could only have one dah dah..or record?” My answer always is and will always be ”Anything Bob Marley.” His music is some of the most pure and passionate music I’ve ever been introduced to. Please join us in celebrating the existence of Bob Marley’s music by sharing Bob Marley videos that you like in the post. …. much love.
This is an unreleased remix to a song Beatnick & K Salaam produced for the album “Whose World Is This” featuring Mos Def and Sizzla. It’s pretty funky. I like this combining of Hip Hop and reggae better than B Real & Damian Marley’s attempt “Fire“.
B. Real (of Cypress Hill) doing a track with Damian Marley most definantly deserves a post. Both artists (Cypress Hill & Damian) who I think are somewhat overlooked in the industry… they’ve got really nice catalogues. If you don’t know what this song is about before listening to it… you may not be too familiar with their previous works…
So you’ve probably heard Kanye’s material sadistically twisted in every way imaginable, but have you heard a Reggae Dub version? I thinks not… mellow out to his track down below…
Also, I’ve been missing something in my life these last few months, and its been a damn good reggae/dancehall mix… well DJ Gabe Real is coming through and supplying this really nice “practice” mix he recorded on two turntables… tracklisting and download are below.

Two things that always feed my soul, some great Reggae, and some classic Pharcyde. DJ Gabe Real, being one of Southern Cali’s hardest working DJ’s, cooks up a condensed soup mash-up of both of my favorite nostalgic sounds, Stalag Riddim + Pharcyde’s “Passin’ Me By.” Make sure you put some clean water in that filthy bong before lighting up… cause that’s just nasty…
You can catch Gabe Real spinning weekly at Mo’ Fire Monday’s (Reggae /Hip Hop / Dub) -OR- our own parties Till Tuesday’s (Indie-Electro) & Ultra Friday’s (Top 40 / Dance) in Riverside, CA. Check out some of the other mixes offered at his site.
Andy Samberg is the shit… I’m starting to get the feeling this guy was a real ass hip hop head when he was younger, cause since he’s been added to the Saturday Night Live staff the hip hop influenced skits have been all over the place & from my guess some of the most popular skits on the show (ie. Chronicles of Narnia, Natalie Portman Rap, Dick In A Box, Palin Rap). Samberg just dropped this digital short about “Ras Trent” pokes fun at that occasional college-kid that falls neck deep for that Rasta culture… funny ish, check it out below.
Grassroots created a festival that is sure to catch some attention this year. This junior year festival grew from its humble beginnings of a few thousand to an expected thirty thousand people this year. The vision of the festival cannot be said better than the the website:
“Our focus is on demonstrating the conscious side of Hip Hop, Reggae and Punk Rock as a tool to demolish racial boundaries, while presenting a platform for the raw uncensored social views of the Jam Band scene. This emphasis is outlined by our strict intent in establishing an annual forum that is directed towards the uniting of our Urban youth, and allowing them the opportunity to understand and undertake a progressive opinion of the social and political doings of the world around them. From this perspective it is our idea that We the People will become an ultimate example of a socially conscious event featuring the most socially aware premiere artists from all styles of music and artistic traits. We the People will present the opportunity to establish a forum of unparalleled diversity and excellence by uniting socially active artists involved with the urban youth and culture and allowing them this momentous opportunity to express themselves in such a forum.”
A lot of festivals have sprung up and have been thrown into prominence around Southern California, however this is one I really like & actually enjoy. It’s like the Anti-Sunset Junction, don’t expect any Ray-Bans & American Apparel here, We The People, is exactly what it claims to be, and if you go expecting anything else you’ll be in for a surprise! Any festival that brings out my inner Zach De La Rocha gets two thumbs up from me!
