EastOfLA’s own secret lover agent man and Applebird affiliate, SPEAK recently sat down and spoke with the folks at GrungeCake to discuss matters such as his many inspirations and future aspirations. As usual, the loquacious and effervescent personality of SPEAK quickly takes over as he lays down the law of how he views rap and his unique approach to his art;
GrungeCake: How do you feel about the direction of Hip-Hop?
Speak: I’ll leave the preaching and overly obnoxious ranting about the depravity of the culture and music to KRS-One. He enjoys the sound of his own voice and beating the drum for what is and what isn’t Hip-Hop. However, in my personal circle Hip-Hop is beyond alive and well. I can’t really speak on what everyone else is doing because it’s really no importance to me, and frankly, I think that’s where a big part of the problem comes in. Hip-Hop should go to city hall and legally change its name to “Focus on the next man.” I can’t name another musical culture or genre where so much emphasis is placed on what everyone else is doing. In no other realm do you find artist so intent on watching their peers fail. It’s a bit stomach turning. All I can do is sit back and enjoy the level of creativity coming from Pheo, Versis, Verbs, Intuition, and Stevie Crooks. As long as they are, challenging themselves and making fantastic music Hip-Hop won’t need a compass and Google maps to find its way.
It should be noted that SPEAK also drops hints surrounding a project he has worked on with homie, AFTA-1, in the form of an EP tentatively due in 2010 titled, “No Distance Just Grace”.
And if you haven’t already heard it, download SPEAK’s instant vintage classic: The Kite Flyers EP (25mb).

We’re very excited to say Binary Star is back in business working on new material and their 10th Anniversary Tour. East of L.A. Lifestyle Group will be working with the legendary duo on strategy & marketing alongside Subterraneous Records. Official press release & media to come, stay tuned! If you’re not on Binary Star’s first and only album, Masters of the Universe, it’s about time you educate yourself, it has an average of 5/5 star rating across 100+ iTunes reviews, and 4.5/5 on Amazon!
Originally released as Waterworld in 1999, Binary Star’s debut album is a beloved underground classic that continues to win praise from hip-hop connoisseurs around the world. Coming out of Michigan, Binary Star shine like a supernova, thanks to intricate wordplay from MCs Senim Silla and One Man Army (aka One Be Lo), supported by alternately hype and mellow production from in-house beatmakers the Trackezoids and Decompoze. The bass-propelled, KRS-sampling “New Hip Hop” is a great example of infinitely quotable bravado, “Indy 500″ plays like a manifesto for independent artists uninterested in watering down their style while begging for a record deal, and “Evolution of Man” fuses slinky guitars and chunky low-end with sultry spoken word and heartfelt romance raps. Also crucial is the triumphant, aptly-named “Conquistadors” and two-part incarceration blues of “I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings.” Though One Man Army has since dropped a few solid solo albums, there has never been a true follow-up to this, (though it was reissued in 2006), which only furthers its legendary status.

Also East of L.A. will be working alongside One Be Lo (aka One.Man.Army of Binary Star) on his third full length album B.A.B.Y. (Being A Black Youth) dropping first quarter 2010. Here’s a nice little clip of a performance we recorded in Las Vegas last Thursday featuring some new lyrics from the One Man Army.
Afta-1 is like a auditory pharmacist picking & producing these tracks with precision to improve your collection of love making music. He teamed up with partner GAS’D to put together this beautiful mix dubbed, “Love Is Real Vol. 3: Selections of Audible Love.” If your looking to get away from all the pomp & circumstance this weekend, lock yourself in your room, light one up (whatever that may be) and mellow out, this mix is fantastic. Take a listen to Afta-1’s most recent E.P. Aftathoughts Vol. 1on LaLa and even cop it for free by creating a free account.

Just a few short hours east of Los Angeles you’ll reach the Coachella Valley, which may sound familiar because of the omnipresent and annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. To most it’s a profound cultural experience over the course of one wild weekend, but to the young resident’s of the Coachella Valley it’s an extremely innovative and progressive music & art scene all year long. It has recently spawned some of our favorite music acts such as: The Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal, D.J. Day, Slipping Into Darkness & art world sensations The Date Farmers. I had the pleasure of being exposed to this scene through our friends at The Coachella Valley Art Scene blog & our pal Alf Alpha.
However sadly the this thriving art community recently lost a friend, his name Gabriel “Glez” Gonzalez. He was a graffiti artist, screen printer, graphic designer & described simply, but fittingly, as a “great guy.” Above is a copy of one of Glez’s screen prints, like all talented artists he leaves a timeless legacy. Alf Alpha got to work on the boards and recorded this new beat in dedication to his friend.
