To many, the break-up of The Libertines six years ago was an overwhelming disappointment and left an immense hole in the then large resurgence in the British indie rock climate. After two instant-classic records, Up The Bracket and The Libertines, the band was making huge strides in the post-punk and garage rock revival scenes. Despite the band’s critical and commercial success, however, tensions between the two frontmen, Carl Barât (vocals/lead guitar) and Pete Doherty (vocals/rhythm guitar) as well as Doherty’s obvious addictions led to their abrupt demise.
Following six years and a slew of solo/side-projects from all four members of the band, The Libertines have decided to make amends and reunite. First on the agenda are highly anticipated special appearances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Lets hope Carl and Pete keep it copacetic this time and old Petey stays clean (ha, right).
It can be said, without a shred of doubt, that Godspeed You! Black Emperor was one of the most influential instrumental rock bands. To this day, the Canadian post-rock pioneers (active during 1994-2003), are widely regarded as a seminal symbol of the genre and tremors of their style and innovation are felt to this day.
Shockingly, the band has abruptly announced an end to their almost decade-long hiatus and will be getting a running start with a headlining/curating slot on the Nightmare Before Christmas event presented by All Tomorrow’s Parties in Minehead, England on December 3-5. The lineup also includes: Bardo Pond, The Ex, Deerhoof, Tim Hecker, Mike Watt and Scout Niblett. According to the band’s announcement, a slew of European/U.K. dates and a small 9-date trek through America are also on the horizon.
Ann Arbor native Andrew Mayer Cohen, better known as Mayer Hawthorne is steadily on his way to becoming a household name. The minstrel of soul turned heads with his breakthrough debut record, A Strange Arrangement, and as a result, has already circumnavigated the globe sharing his retro-inspired brand of pop with sold-out crowds.
To commemorate the end of his two-month U.S. tour (which wraps up at The Warfield Theater on April 15th with indie juggernauts, Passion Pit), record label Stones Throw, Bay area street clothiers HUF and design artist Freegums have collaborated on an exclusive tee and USB drive pack to be sold at a special release party. The heart-shaped USB drive comes pre-loaded with Mayer Hawthorne’s cover of Tony Bennett’s classic, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”.

Hip Hop Congress at U.C. Irvine has been busy coordinating the Urban Arts Festival alongside their student government.
This year, Urban Arts Festival will be a mixture of many things: cyphers, sales of emerging fashion brands, a dance showcase, live and interactive entertainment, all topped off with a hip hop concert featuring live-show rockers Zion-I and the ever talented Aloe Blacc.
Honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the event entitled “Reigniting the Dream” will kick off on Thursday, January 21st, with on-stage performances from nationally-recognized artists Ise Lyfe, One Be Lo, Uncultivated Rabbits, and Ladies Room at the Crystal Cove Auditorium at 6 pm. The performances will follow with the March of Dreams and an en masse drum circle and cultural dance celebration on Ring Road at 8 pm, where all are welcome to join. On Friday, January 22nd, the celebration will continue as we “Live the Dream” at the flagpoles at noon, with various performances by dance crews and bands, as well as food sold by the traveling gourmets of Kogi Truck.
If your group includes a drumming or cultural dancing group of any kind, we are inviting your group to participate in the commencement of the drumming. And of course, everyone is welcome to bring their own preferred percussive instruments to join the celebration.
