post DJ Chong Wizard | Eclectic Relaxation

January 9th, 2010

This is making it’s way around the interweb this past week. A “mixtape” of A Tribe Called Quest  remixes by DJ Chong Wizard.

With heavy hitters like Del Tha Funke Homospaien,Tanya Morgan, Panacea’s K Murdock, El da Sensei and Moka Only you’ll expect something more memorable. However, what you get is a lukewarm mix of a bunch no-name emcees spitting over remixed classic Tribe tunes. It’s definitely worth a listen, no doubt. Still with the name of A Tribe called Quest attached to project most would expect greatness not just goodness.

post RAKIM | Holy Are You

July 21st, 2009

Filed under: Hip Hop, Revival Rap, Uncategorized — Hamza21 @ 4:36 pm

 rakim_-_the_seventh_seal.jpg

We’ve been here before but this time it actually looks like Rakim  will soon release the long awaited album “The Seventh Seal.” Dubbed one of the greatest emcees to grace hip hop, it’s exciting to actually have a single from the mysterious album.

“Holy You Are” which features a sample from the great David Axelrod is classic throwback boom-bap tune to make heads realize what Hip Hop is supposed to sound like. No autotune, no electro sounding beat just straight hardcore Hip Hop.

With this reappearance of Rakim it is indeed shaping up to be great year for music.

post Move Merchants | Live As It Gets

May 11th, 2009

Filed under: Hip Hop, Revival Rap, Uncategorized — Hamza21 @ 1:44 pm

Just in time for summer a nice track with throwback feel to the early days of Hip Hop.

The Move Merchants are comprised of emcee Manchild from the Christian Rap Group Mars Ill and DJ Sean P from the Christian Rap Group Bone Circus. Is there anybody else besides me who thought Christian rap died in the late 90’s? Well apparently it didn’t and now we have a cool summertime track to enjoy. The song also features two other christian rappers named Playdough and (occasional DJ) Theory Hazit

Guy Fawkes over at hhhead sent this nice compilation of Nas tunes over to me. This is a perfect download for those who aren’t really aware of microphone legend Nasir Jones.

“Anyway, the concept behind this compilation was to truly take a trip down Memory Lane or take a seat in da park and reminisce on the illustrious career of a hip hop great. So, we took the two best tracks off every Nas album (including Lost Tapes) and added a few pre-Illmatic gems. If you’re a Nas stan like myself, I understand that you may already have every one of these tracks, but still cop it! This sh*t will be the perfect Nas playlist. Trust.”

Filed under: 90s, Hip Hop, Mixtapes, Revival Rap, Uncategorized — Hamza21 @ 8:55 pm

Awhile ago The Hundreds and DJ Mike B released “Drive By Bangers Vol 2″ a sequel to DBB Vol 1 released back in 2006. Truthfully I never heard of these mixes nor Mike B before a few weeks ago. Anyway Mike B goes gangsta on Vol 1 with west coast “gangsta rap” tunes from the late 80’s and early 90’s . (See Tracklisting HERE). On Volume 2 (Tracklisting HERE) it’s nice mix of artists from the Fresh Coast. NWA to Ras Kass to Murs To Rodney O & Joe Cooley a nice mixture indeed.

post E Reece and Core Elements |L.I.S.N 2 This Live In Studio |Album Review

January 26th, 2009

Filed under: Hip Hop, Revival Rap, Uncategorized, video — Hamza21 @ 12:00 pm

lisn_cover1.jpg

E Reece originally hailing from Maryland but now residing in Los Angeles will release the US version of his album L.I.S.N 2 This Live.In Studio  tomorrow on January 27th 2009. He released a Japanese version back in November 2008 and now an US audience can enjoy his new album.

E Reece’s talent has made some heads take notice but still hasn’t generated enough buzz from the mainstream rap industry.Which is a shame since E Reece brings that old school flavor to his music I think many people are searching for nowadays.

His band Core Elements consists of a revolving group of musicians. Some of which have played with the likes of Mariah Carey and others.

“My live band “Core Elements” is dope and is made up of various talented musicians from LA and beyond. A revolving door on guitar, keys, bass and drums, plus DJ Inka One. You never know who you might see sitting in!”

post The Digger’s Vault | Run DMC | Final

January 2nd, 2009

Filed under: Hip Hop, Revival Rap, The Digger's Vault, Uncategorized — Hamza21 @ 9:00 am

In Buddhism (No I’m not a buddhist) Ignorance is defined as one part delusion and one part confusion.

We don’t perceive the truth of how things actually are directly, without distortion or illusion.Instead we insist on seeing thigs as we would like them to be.
Lama Surya Das - Awakening The Buddha Within

It’s time to face facts “The Digger’s Vault” has been a failure. It’s been akin to being a person telling a bar full of patrons the evils of alcohol. Truth indeed but wrong message, wrong time and wrong place. So I decided to end “The Digger’s Vault” on eastofla.com. Instead I will refocus my efforts on posting new music rather than classics and gems from the past.

Truthfully 99% of what the music industry releases is straight garbage. However, there are many independent artists producing quality music. I intend on bringing something new, or relative new, every week to EOLA. Unlike now where I would occasionally post something new weekly.

Now for this week’s and the final Digger’s Vault. We leave at the beginning with Hip Hop first mainstream superstars. The highly influential and most respected group in hop hop history….

For alot of younger heads when it comes Run DMC you simply had to be there to understand. Before mainstream or even “urban” radio, before MTV or VH1 decided to play Hip Hop videos there was one group known throughout Hip Hop culture worldwide as the “Kings Of Rock”.Three guys from Queens, a borough at that time not known for producing any Hip Hop greats, were the first to bring the raw and ruggedness as well, dare I say, swagger (I hate that word) to Hip Hop’s growing subculture. For certainty other groups were known at the time The Cold Crush Brothers, Fearless Four, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five but none like Run DMC along with Jam Master Jay captivated the Hip Hop masses as they did.

They had a special chemistry and a sound unlike other groups of the time. Their stripped down bare essentials sound represented the street not a slick marketable product.

Other groups at the time still were experimenting with tweaking disco-like music and rapping over it.Yet others preferred to experiment more with new equipment and sounds. However Run DMC and their producers, the “King of Rap” himself, Kurtis Blow and Davy DMX blended musicianship (both Kurt & Davy are talented musicians) with a raw stripped down sound. The end result of Kurt’s and Davy’s production was something hypnotic and even addictive.

Jam Master Jay’s influence on Hip Hop Deejays, myself included, cannot be matched be anyone with exceptions being Grandmaster Flash, Grandwizard Theodore & DJ Qbert. For many he was the first DJ to actually seen scratching live.

The first nationwide Hip Hop tour called The Fresh Festival aka The Fresh Fest in 1985 brought Hip Hop heavyweights Whodini, Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow and Run DMC to many cities throughout the US. For many this was not only their first Hip Hop concert but first concert experience period.

The excitement of seeing people who you viewed as like yourself perform live and perform incredibly well (unlike most performers today) was as good as it got. Whodini’s DJ Grandmaster Dee stole many a show from headliner Kurtis Blow. Most nights, however, Run DMC and Jam Master Jay’s skills on the turntables stole the show and ultimately the tour.

Until his murder of 2002 Jay was a figure who every Hip Hop deejay had as their blueprint or role model of what could be. A kind of Obama for Deejays. It may sound funny but believe me when I say back in mid 1980’s Jay created that kind of excitement and enthusiasm Obama created but for Deejays and those wanting to become one.

As lyricists Run & DMC weren’t the best but what made them standout above all others were their delivery & chemistry. Their tag team style of rhyming though done before was never done with so much style. The MC’s who used this tag team style before, most memorably The Cold Crush Brothers,  were entertainers while Run & DMC were rappers.

They weren’t so much as trying to entertain you but as to spit rhymes over beats. This was evident in their aggressive delivery.

All in all Joseph Simmons,Darryl McDaniels, Jason Mizell better known as RUN DMC and Jam Master Jay craved out a place not only in Hip Hop history and the music industry but in US history as the ambassadors of a culture that change the world.

Now I have something special for you courtesy of 238 Beats I have a recording of Run DMC live on Mr. Magic’s Radio show in 1986.Download Here
